Last edition of my first series! I know its only been three posts long, but I get bored easily. =)
This is actually something a little more serious than my last two posts, so this is something that you could consider doing.
Also, the replies I’m about to list below, can be helpful when you honestly don’t know what to say. When you’re struck completely dumb. When you have nothing else to say.
1) “Oh.” It sounds like such a simple word, it even sounds like it wouldn’t do the job of answering. But it does. You can say it in so many different tones and with so many different facial expressions that it covers everything from, “My dog just died.” to “I’m getting married.” to “I hate you.”
2) “Really?” Ditto what I said in #1.
3) “Why do you think that?” This is a sentence that is kind of like #2, it’s different however because it’s not quite as applicable as the words “Oh” and “Really” are. For example, when your best friend calls you up crying and tells you her dog just died, you shouldn’t say, “Why do you think that?” Similarly, when your cousin confides in you that shes getting married, the best response is not “Why do you think that.” Although I’m sure she would be more than happy to show you her 20k engagement ring.
4) “I’m sorry you feel that way.” This is my best response to an insult. The problem is that I always forget it and instead shoot off a retort that usually begins with “Your face…” and ends with whatever the insult was. It’s a little bit more fun, and a lot more immature. However, saying “I’m sorry you feel that way” is really the perfect response to an insult. Or any rude comment. It lays all the blame on the other person, and not on your supposed character flaw. Also, it leaves the other person with no response. Except for mumbling something like, “Yea…me too…”
Anyways. Good Luck!!!
Smile!!!
